The Roger Varian-trained Anipa caused a minor upset when winning the Weatherbys Private Banking Cheshire Oaks at Chester on Wednesday.

The 16/1 shot broke well and was quickly settled in second place by jockey Andrea Atzeni as the field made their way around the tight turns of the Roodee, with Joseph O'Brien happy to restrain the 15/8 favourite Terrific towards the rear of the field.

As the nine-strong line up began to turn out of the back straight, the weakening Groovejet, who had been in third place behind Secret Pursuit and Anipa, caused some minor traffic problems as the front two began to quicken which left the pacesetters with a handy advantage coming into the home straight.

Secret Pursuit battled on well but was always a sitting duck under Oisin Murphy and Anipa pounced a furlong from home to hit the front and box on well to record a half length victory.

Varian was delighted, if a little surprised, by the result.

"She's a good little filly and keeps on improving," said the trainer.

"On ratings, she had to step up on what she had done previously but I'm delighted she's done so. I actually thought her price reflected her chance but it's great that she's gone on and won.

Anipa does not hold an entry in the Investec Oaks and would have to be supplemented if she were to take her chance at Epsom.

"At this stage we wouldn't commit her to it," said Varian.

"She seems to handle these quirky tracks though so we'll see how she is when we get back home. I would think the Ribblesdale is the race to go for. Mr Bizakov (Anipa's owner) is here and obviously I'll have a discussion with him, but I think the Ribblesdale is the likelihood.

"I'd be surprise if she was supplemented at this stage, but we'll have a discussion."

Atzeni was also pleased with the result.

"She's improved a lot and it's great to see her improve from a Wolverhampton maiden to this," said the jockey.

"She's not big but she's tough and she's done it well today. I wanted to be positive and she's travelled really nicely all the way round.

"Everything has worked out really well. The rain is getting in the ground though - I'd expect it to be good to soft before long."
