As with a number of the days' races, there was no hiding place from a pace perspective with the Mark Johnston-trained pair of Hunting Ground and Blue Wave racing prominently along with Arch Villain, and having seen off the attentions of that pair, it was Jim Crowley that was to boot on for home with a couple of furlongs to go.
Followers of the favourite were however, unconcerned, as George Baker sat motionless on Litigant, and having sat off the initial gallop, the five-year-old made his move and took aim at the leader.
While Amanda Perrett's inmate battled on bravely in front, his effort was to be in vain as the winner took his measure inside the final furlong despite initially appearing as if he might not entirely be keen about putting the issue to bed.
The front pair finishing well clear of Communicator in third as Castilo Del Diablo flew from last place to be a never-nearer fourth.
A beaming Baker said: "I was always confident and everything went to plan. For a stayer he possesses a good turn of foot and Seamus (Durack) has done well with him."
The winning trainer added: "I was really happy with that as he's been improving at home. He was entered in the Cesarewitch last year and I'll be looking forwarding to seeing him running on the grass."
