O'Connell brought Tom Taaffe's six-year-old to make his bid at the second-last where Bog Warrior unseated his rider and Aupcharlie fell.
That left Argocat (10/1) to hold off his sole remaining rival Turban, the 5/4 favourite, by three-quarters of a length.
Taaffe said: "He got all messed up when he fell at Down Royal.
"He broke three ribs and he had internal injuries. We had to get his confidence back, too.
"The run the last day at Thurles (sixth in the Kinloch Brae) worked out to be Grade One form.
"He showed plenty of resolution there after he met the last wrong.
"I don't think he'll go to Cheltenham. He's more of a Liverpool horse.
"We'll probably look at the Bowl and we may find something for him between now and then."
