Fennell Bay impressed at Musselburgh and staked his claim for the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham.

The former Mark Johnston inmate won at Fakenham on his debut over hurdles for John Ferguson and he made light work of his six rivals this afternoon, winning at a price of 8/11.

Denis O'Regan always had his mount near the pace and, although he had rivals near him up the home straight, he always looked in command of the situation, eventually scoring by an easy five lengths.

Second home was Chris Grant's Ollie G (16/1), with Donald McCain's Plan Again back in third.

Ferguson said: "He's in a few at the Festival but he's a Royal Ascot winner that has won two from over hurdles so he deserves to take his chance in a race like the Neptune."

The winner's odds for the 2m5f Neptune were subsequently trimmed to 25/1 (from 40/1) by Sky Bet, with the same price quoted for the Albert Bartlett over three miles.

The former Royal Ascot winner is unchanged at 33/1 for the shorter Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle.

Sky Bet's Racing PR manager Michael Shinners said: "It's no surprise that Fennell Bay proved too good for his rivals considering he has won at Royal Ascot, but the style of his performance impressed.

"He looks to have plenty of stamina and looked better the further they went so the Neptune and the Albert Bartlett look the two most obvious Cheltenham races for him."
