Magnus Maximus caused a 25/1 upset in the £100,000 Tattersalls Millions 3-Y-O Sprint at Newmarket.
Ridden by Pat Dobbs, the apparant Richard Hannon second-string showed good speed down the centre of the track in the valuable six-furlong heat.
He was still travelling powerfully at the half-way point and Dobbs kicked on over a furlong from the finish.
The Roger Varian-trained market leader Toofi was a little outpaced going into the dip but he picked up well in the closing stages to get to within three-quarters of a length of the winner.
Marco Botti's lightly-raced Naadirr filled the places in third.
Hannon said of the winner: "That was a pleasant surprise as I thought six furlongs would be too sharp for him. We felt he wants a mile.
"To be fair he travelled great and never looked like getting beaten.
"He has won a very nice race there and we can diversify with him a bit. We will get him home first."
