Harry Fry had described this three mile contest, registered as the Warfield Mares' Hurdle, as the 'Gold Cup' for his seven year old and his mare didn't let connections down with a battling performance.

In truth, it appeared as though the daughter of Exit To Nowhere was going to win fairly comfortably with nearest challenger Mickie under pressure and the remainder seemingly struggling.

Carole's Spirit, however, had other ideas and gradually clawed back the deficit to draw alongside at the last but Noel Fehily had a little more up his sleeve as Highland Retreat battled back to regain the upperhand and go on to score by two lengths.

Ciara O'Connor, Fry's partner and assistant, said: "The more rain that came, the better. She won a point-to-point and will go chasing next season. I'd say Cheltenham would be unlikely as she needs soft ground. She's also due a break, so this might have been her Gold Cup."

The winner as introduced into the betting for the OLBG.com Mares' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival at 14/1 by Sky Bet.
