Jamie Spencer was at his strongest to persuade Castilo Del Diablo (9/2) to put his best foot forwards in the coral.co.uk Handicap at Lingfield Park.

The winner, who was completing a double on the card for trainer David Simcock, had finished second on three of his last five starts and appeared as though he was up to his old tricks as Modernstone and Swing Alone flew down the outside.

Spencer, however, had other ideas and conjured another run out of the five year old who was re-fitted with cheekpieces which replaced the blinkers he had worn on recent outings.

Settled in the first half of the field against the rail, Castilo Del Diablo was always travelling well for Spencer and the race opened up beautifully for him as the field panned across the course off the final turn.

He initially struggled to pick up and his supporters must have feared the worse as the challengers flew down the outside from off the pace but the Teofilo gelding eventually found his stride and ran on to score by a neck from 4/1 favourite Modernstone.

Simcock said: "I'm pleased they put such good prize money on and they were rewarded with a competitive field. The horse has been called a few names but I think he's genuine and he's had a wind operation and problems with his legs.

"He's better on all-weather than turf, so we'll have to looking towards Good Friday."

There was a sting in the tale for Spencer who was suspended for three days for using his whip without giving his mount time to respond.

The Stewards also held an enquiry into the running and riding of Grendisar and found Paolo Sirigu in breach of Rule (B)59.4 and guilty of failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing.

The rider stated that his instructions were to drop the gelding out, as he is a tricky ride, and to finish as close as he could. However, he felt that he had delayed his challenge for too long and could have finished in third place. The trainer stated that in his opinion his jockey asked for his effort too late.

Sirigu was suspended for 10 days.
