Just three runners went to post in the absence of Seymour Eric and having seen off rank outsider Buachaill Alainn by the tenth fence, the big two in the market were left to fight out the first prize.

Shotgun Paddy had made most in the race and despite hitting a couple of fences, he maintained a resolute enough gallop though Nick Scholfield appeared happy to let his horse be given a lead as he oozed confidence in behind.

Black Thunder was produced to take closer order with five to jump but the result was to be no foregone conclusion as the long time leader responded to the challenge and as they made their way to the second-last, the Nicholls inmate required considerably more urging from the rider.

In the end, Black Thunder managed to find the necessary impetus to outstay his rival and confirm thoughts of the RSA Chase some four months away.
