The Colin Tizzard-trained 10-year-old jumped well in the main but always had Sue Smith's gelding breathing down his neck all the way down the home straight.
Brendan Powell's mount pinged the last to give him a two length lead but Vintage Star was nothing if not persistent and almost reeled in the winner with 100 yards left to go.
However, Hey Big Spender was not for passing and stuck his neck out gamely to record a neck victory, with the Dan Skelton-trained Baile Anrai a further nine lengths back in third.
Powell said: "It was a pleasure to ride him as he's been a great servant down the years. He jumped great, apart from at the last, but when the other horse came to him he went again.
"He dug deep and he's done well as the ground was a bit quick for him. I know he was 10lb lower than when he last won this but that was two years ago."
Sky Bet cut the winner - who was winning this race for the second time - to 20/1 for the Coral Welsh National at Chepstow while the runner-up remains a 16/1 shot.
