My Tent Or Yours hardly came off the bridle as he ran out the extremely impressive winner of the StanJames.com Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle on Saturday.

The 8/11 favourite was always travelling sweetly under champion jockey A P McCoy and took up the running from long-time leader Cotton Mill with two to jump.

The Nicky Henderson-trained six-year-old quickly put daylight between his rivals and stormed up the home straight to record a three length success. Cockney Sparrow rallied well to snatch second place from Grumeti on the run-in but the 5/2 second-favourite Melodic Rendezvous struggled to keep tabs on the leaders and was nudged along to keep his position a long way from home.

Speaking from Newbury, Henderson said: "He looked good from what I saw of it, and all being well he'll go off to the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton now."

McCoy, who completed a treble on the day, said: "He's won easy but you would have wanted him to, really. I felt us and Grumeti really quickened it up from three out and were really racing.

"It was a good performance, a good starting point, and I'm not surprised he did it like that. But for the life of me I can't understand bookmakers cutting him for the StanJames.com Champion Hurdle - he was by far the best horse on paper going in.

"He's got to keep on improving. Hurricane Fly has won 17 Grade Ones and he is the one we all still have to beat, for me."

Sky Bet were suitably impressed following the race and now make My Tent Of Yours the 4/1 favourite for the Champion Hurdle, just ahead of recent Kempton scorer The New One who is a 9/2 shot.

"It was an incredibly impressive performance from My Tent Or Yours up at Newcastle and the manner of his victory means he fully deserves his place at the front of the Champion Hurdle market," said Sky Bet spokesman Michael Shinners.

Trainer John Quinn said of runner-up Cockney Sparrow: "She'll go for a Listed mares' race at Doncaster on January 25 and then she'll go to Cheltenham for the David Nicholson. If she stays she'll have a right chance.

"What I liked was that she stayed on again when it looked like she'd only be third. She's been placed in a Grade One now so it's job done, that's what we wanted. The winner will take a lot of beating in the Champion Hurdle so it was a massive run. You've got to take a punt, if it doesn't work you can always take a step back."
