Prompter looked to be making prodigious progress as they turned for home and his supporters could have had cause for optimism as the leader delivered made two ugly leaps at the last two flights.
Yet, the Milan gelding managed to find a little more on the run in when asked and ultimately Orthodox Lad was to stay on from a long way back to secure a 1-2 for the handler.
Newland said: "We hoped it might happen and it's fantastic. For a yard like ours to do it in a race like this - we've only got 12 boxes.
"The winner is a very nice horse, we got him off Barry Connell in Ireland and he was very generous in giving me a chance to train him because for various reasons he wasn't performing over there.
"His new owners have been patient as we were aiming him at Cheltenham in March but he got kicked and chipped a bone and missed a few months.
"He's a very nice horse."
