The much maligned Vino Griego (25/1) finally opened his account over fences in the Timeform Novices' Handicap Chase at Cheltenham.

Gary Moore's eight year old had failed to get his head in front in 17 previous outings over fences but barely came off the bridle in running out an easy 19 length winner of the two mile five contest.

The testing conditions took their toll on the field and there were just three horses still in contention turning for home with the well-backed Renard D'Irlande tracking Sew On Target with the eventual winner in third.

Sew On Target was the first to crack and many might have expected Vino Griego to wilt as he has done so often in the past but the son of Kahyasi, who was fourth in the Centenary Novices' Handicap Chase at the 2011 Festival, took the lead approaching the last and kept on well under Jamie Moore.

Renard D'Irlande finished a tired second while Battle Group stayed on from a long way back to take third.

The winning jockey said: "I know a lot of people have called him names, and I have in the past, but he does enjoy racing and he's been up against 150-rated horses and finished second last time.

"I rode him a bit differently today and tried to take my time. Maybe that will give him some confidence and he can build on it."
