Willie Mukllins' Arvika Ligeonniere led from pillar to post in the Grade One Racing Post Novice Chase at Leopardstown under Paul Townend.

The seven-year-old impressed on his last appearance in the Drinmore when he led all the way over two and a half miles and the same tactics were employed over the shorter trip of two miles and one furlong on Boxing Day.

Baily Green and Oscars Well gave him plenty of rope up front and while they closed the gap in the closing stages neither could get to the game winner.

Jessie Harrington's Oscars Well finished runner-up, two and a half lengths behind at the line.

Sky Bet weren't too impressed, though, as they pushed out the winner to 7/1 from 6/1 for the Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham.

Arvika Ligeonniere did jump to his right throughout while he may also not get his own way up front at Cheltenham should the likes of Overturn line up.

Winning trainer Willie Mullins said: "He got a bit tired but the ground is heavy.

"He settled well over the first and had a great jump. He jumped the second and third well and then piled on the pace.

"He missed the third last as Paul wanted an easy one and the horse kept going. Because he's so free Paul is not inclined to pull him back and fiddle one.

"Paul said he was idling turning for home - I was wondering whether was he getting tired.

"He's a big strong horse and we'll look forward to the (Irish) Arkle back here in February."
