Patrick Mullins equalled the long-standing record for number of winners by an amateur jockey in a calendar year in Ireland when Union Dues won the bumper at Navan on Sunday

It was his 72nd success of 2012, Billy Parkinson the last amateur to ride so many, way back in 1915.

Union Dues was making his debut for Willie Mullins, having previously run under the tutelage of Tony Mullins on his only previous start.

Hidden Lite gave the field a bold sighter under Jane Mangan but the pack began to close inside the final two furlongs, and Mullins delivered his challenge inside the distance.

Champagne James, who had won at the course in November, was sent off as an 8/11 favourite to follow up in this higher grade, and though he travelled with plenty of purpose, he had no answer to a worthy winner.

The victory secured an 18/1 treble for Willie Mullins on the afternoon.
