Bold Sir Brian was a comfortable winner of the Sportingbet Future Stars Chase at Sandown on Friday.

  • Bold Sir Brian on his way to victory...
  • ...and Peter Buchanan explains exactly how he did it

Sent off as the 11/10 favourite, the six year old travelled well under Peter Buchanan having been settled last of the four runners.

Mistakes at two of the Railway Fences on the final circuit had supporters momentarily concerned, but when he moved upsides the front-running Pacha Du Polder at the Pond Fence there were none travelling better.

Grove Pride had long been left behind and when Triolo D'Alene also found the going tough turning for home, Bold Sir Brian was left to produce two sound jumps in the home straight to beat Pacha Du Polder by 16 lengths.

The runner-up had gradually warmed to his task under Ruby Walsh but had no answer when joined three from home, although he in turn was clear of the remainder.

Bold Sir Brian's trainer Lucinda Russell said: "We've taken him out of the King George VI Chase, which we felt was the right thing to do, but I'd say he will be well worth an entry in the Gold Cup after that performance.

"He was entitled to win off his mark but I was really pleased at the way he sprinted away from the last. He made a couple of minor mistakes but the great thing about him is that there is a lot of improvement still to come and we think he is a very exciting young chaser.

"I thought soft ground was a must but Pete Buchanan isn't so sure and we're looking at a nice staying chase at Wetherby over Christmas next or something similar back at Sandown early in the New Year."
