Coolmore bought a 50 per cent stake in Todd Pletcher's colt prior to the race and that decision proved justified as he showed great tenacity under Rosie Napravnik, who becomes only the second female jockey to win a Breeders' Cup race.
Title Contender took them along but faded rounding the home turn as Shanghai Bobby and He's Had Enough did battle up front, the latter looking the likely winner as he overhauled the winner in the run to the line.
However, Shanghai Bobby pulled out more to beat He's Had Enough with Capo Bastone chasing them both home in third.
Napravnik said: "I hope everybody appreciated the excitement.
"Bobby came to a walk and was looking around and looking at the stands - really unfocussed.
"Once he gets the lead he kind of gets a little lost.
"I knew he was better than that at the four-pole.
"I knew he'd kick back in."
Pletcher said: "I thought we were in big trouble, but it was a courageous effort."
