Only Dreams was an appropriate winner for Nick Lampard as the eight-year-old launched the rookie trainer's career with a shock success in the Wincanton Racecourse Handicap Chase.
Having cut his teeth with point-to-pointers, Lampard only received his licence proper on Monday and Only Dreams was just his second runner when popping into the winner's enclosure at 33-1.
He was similarly disregarded for a hunter chase at Leicester in 2008 when his owner Howard Spooner - who also owns the Outside Chance pub in Manton with Guy Sangster - backed him down from 100-1 to 28s to net himself a "six-figure sum".
Marlborough-based Lampard, who has the privilege of using the historic Manton gallops, said: "He burst blood vessels after winning at Leicester so we treated those and ran him in a point-to-point later in the year.
"He didn't burst there so we knew the treatment had worked.
"He had the best winning form in the race and has done it well.
"I only have three horses at the moment, including Pur De Sivola who was with Alan King last year."
Carole's Legacy barely broke sweat to open her account over fences at the first time of asking as she obliged as the 1-6 favourite in the EBF/TBA Mares' Novices' Chase.
Nicky Henderson's five-year-old was ultra consistent over timber last season and the half-sister to the stable's talented Mad Max did not have to be at her best to brush aside two inferior rivals.
Henderson's assistant, Tom Symonds, said: "She was good enough to win a Listed bumper at Aintree but chasing was always going to be her game and it's good to see her finally doing it.
"The mares' programme is well set out and will dictate where she goes. She will come on for the run."
Richard Johnson fired Triggerman along the run-in to deny Paul Nicholls' only runner of the afternoon in the Blackmore Building Contractors Novices' Hurdle.
The champion trainer has a fine record in the race but his 5-4 favourite Vico was outgunned by the Philip Hobbs-trained Triggerman (5-2) and suffered a length defeat.
Hobbs said: "The slow pace didn't help and he was too keen early but kept on well.
"I think he will stay further and three miles should not be a problem."
Supporters of Newbay Bob were left licking their wounds when he tipped up after travelling ominously well in the Bathwick Tyres Handicap Chase, leaving fellow front-runner Tarquinius (8-1) to mark himself down as a stayer on the up.
"We thought we would be in the frame without winning," said trainer Charlie Mann's representative Chrissy Barnard.
"He is just a young horse but jumps well and popped away nicely in front."
A crunching fall at Uttoxeter in the spring failed to dent Minnie Hill's confidence as the 7-1 chance struck in the Kingwell Restaurant Handicap Hurdle, while Campfire Tales (18-1) took Wincanton "Hands And Heels" Jumps Series Novices' Handicap Hurdle.
