Aidan O'Brien claimed his second Jumeirah Dewhurst Stakes as 33-1 outsider Beethoven led home a Ballydoyle one-two in the Group One event at Newmarket.

Eight years on from subsequent champion Rock Of Gibraltar seeing off stablemates Landseer and Tendulkar to score for O'Brien, he again dominated the race with Beethoven and Fencing Master fighting out the finish, while his highly-touted Steinbeck was not far away in fourth.

Champion jockey Ryan Moore took over aboard the exposed winner for his 10th career start, and he buried the Goffs Million Sprint fourth deep in the pack as Johnny Murtagh drove Steinbeck into an early lead.

The latter had been off the track since his maiden win early in the campaign, and lack of match practice took its toll as he wilted in the final furlong.

Beethoven on the other hand was fully wound up and charged away meeting the rising ground in a first-time visor to deny his staying-on stablemate Fencing Master by a neck.

Clive Cox's Glorious Goodwood winner Xtension was a nose adrift in third, with Steinbeck a neck back in fourth.

Jim Bolger was bidding for his fourth consecutive Dewhurst with Chabal, but the 7-2 favourite dropped away having forced the issue early and will now join Godolphin after fading into 10th.

Coral and Ladbrokes introduced the winner into the Stanjames.com 2000 Guineas market at 20-1, with the latter leaving Arcano unchanged at the head of the market at 10-1 alongside Canford Cliffs.

William Hill were less impressed and go 25-1, with Fencing Master at 20s.

O'Brien said: "It is great to be in this position.

"He's progressing all the time and had been getting better with every run.

"My son Joseph rode him the other day and said there was plenty in there and to put a visor on him to maybe sharpen him up a little bit, so that's what we did.

"He is so progressive that he had to be saving a little bit for himself and he can be a little bit lazy when he goes, so the blinkers have helped him a bit.

"The winner is very straightforward to train and is a smart horse.

"We have always thought he is very good, and I would say the three of them could be milers.

"Beethoven is a possible for the Breeders' Cup and has the turf or Polytrack races as options."

He added of the fourth: "I was delighted with Steinbeck.

"Johnny said in an ideal world he would have liked to have a lead and jump him in. He said he couldn't take him back out and he got a bit tired in the end.

"He had been off for a long time so you would have to be over the moon with that."

Moore added: "To be fair to the horse, it was his first time in a visor. He picked up nicely and fought hard at the end.

"He was always travelling really well. I had him in behind Kevin Manning's horse (Chabal) and he quickened up nicely at the end.

"It shows the strength they have at Ballydoyle in the two-year-old department and how tough it was for Johnny. In horse races anything can happen."

Xtension took the lead inside the final furlong and was only caught late on, with William Hill leaving him unchanged at 25-1 for the 2000 Guineas.

Trainer Clive Cox said: "It was a great run and that is my first Group One placing.

"I can't wait for next season and he wouldn't mind slightly further so he gets a chance to warm into the race.

"We are definitely looking at the Guineas and he is going to keep me full of excitement during the winter."
