Roman Republic gave Goodwood specialist Mark Johnston another success at the Glorious meeting in the Summer Vase Stakes.
Neil Callan took the lead on the 9-2 shot over a furlong and a half out, and the Cape Cross colt kept on strongly to keep his rivals at bay.
Roman Republic went on to score by three-quarters of a length from Sopranist, with 7-2 favourite Mirrored half a length away in third and River Captain fourth.
Callan said: "Last time at Newmarket I thought I had it wrapped up going into the Dip.
"The horse that beat me, Firebet, was second in the Group Three here on Tuesday so the form stacked up.
"He's had a break since then and felt a different horse today as he was switched on and travelled good."
Johnston said: "He's a really nice horse. He had a little problem which kept him off last summer and ever since he has run like an inexperienced horse.
"Neil said he switched off much better than last time but I think there is still more to come."
John Gosden, trainer of the runner-up, added: "He's run well and it was a good performance in a big, open handicap.
"I thought he had every chance of winning, but he didn't."
