BELENUS EXTENDS GODOLPHIN RUN

Belenus landed a first Pattern-race success as Godolphin continued their amazing run of form in the feature totesport.com Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury.

Godolphin, who also struck with Pictavia in yesterday's Upavon Stakes, had sent out seven winners from their last eight runners and Belenus was sent off the 11-10 favourite to extend the run.

Frankie Dettori had the Dubai Millennium colt poised just off the pace set by Prince Of Light in the Group Three contest before making his move over a furlong out.

He quickly shook off the attentions of Notability at the distance to run out a length-and-a-quarter winner as 50-1 outsider Kings Point stayed on for third.

Belenus was considered a possible Classic contender by Godolphin at the beginning of last season but trainer Saeed bin Suroor believes he just falls short of the top level.

He said: "He's improving all the time and like all Dubai Millenniums appreciated the softer ground today.

"Last year he was weak but he's strengthened up and although there is no plan for him I think he's quite capable of winning a Group Two."

Dettori added: "I gave him a smack which he didn't like so I pushed him out hands and heels.

"He's a bit of a hot customer at home but he's on an upward curve and I think he can win a Group Two."

Dettori was completing the second leg of a double after steering Trick Or Treat to a three-and-a-half-length win in the EBF Fillies' Handicap.

The James Given-trained 15-8 favourite was completing a four-timer as she pulled away for a stylish success over Candle.

Given said: "Frankie rode my first Group winner in Jessica's Dream and now he's partnered my first four-timer with this filly.

"It would be lovely to think she could carry on improving and pick up some black type."

Jamie Spencer was also in double form as he took both divisions of the the Stella Artois Maiden Auction Stakes on Caldra and Streets Ahead.

A gelding operation seemed to work the oracle for Caldra (5-1) as he got off the mark at the third attempt with a half-length victory over Duke Of Tuscany.

Trainer Sylvester Kirk said: "He really disappointed me on fast ground at Folkestone after which we decided to have the snip done.

"The operation has calmed him down and this was overdue as I thought he was better than Elhamri at the beginning of the year."

Spencer clinched his 15.5-1 brace as Streets Ahead registered a narrow victory over Worldly in the second division.

The Andrew Balding-trained colt justified 7-4 favouritism as he just prevailed by a neck with Mount Hermon a further three lengths back in third.

Balding said: "I've always liked this horse and Jamie didn't have to give him a hard race.

"He's learned each time he's run and today he travelled well and then idled when he hit the front.

"We will see what the handicapper does and take it from there."

Vino relished the ease in conditions as she justified support in the Mary Wort Memorial Maiden Stakes.

The filly was backed from 5-1 into 7-2 and, despite being short of room at a crucial stage over two furlongs out, was always poised behind Whistle Away.

When Michael Hills asked her to quicken, she readily went to the front but needed to be kept up to her work to hold the promising Highland Blaze by a head.

Trainer Barry Hills said: "She'd been off the course for a while and was green and fresh. I double entered her today and, if it hadn't rained, she wouldn't have run.

"When I arrived the ground was still firm on the pull-up but when I looked at the main course, it was fine. She ought to win again - she will improve on that."

Philip Hobbs landed a rare winner on the Flat when Fair Along powered to an impressive five-length win in the Blackthorn Cider Handicap.

The four-year-old finished second to stablemate Detroit City in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham in March and he quickly took up his customary place at the head of affairs.

Dane O'Neill only had to keep the 7-1 shot up to his work to notch a comfortable victory over Shore Thing.

Stormy Monday (5-1) appreciated the switch back to turf as he took the closing Axminster Carpets Apprentice Handicap for trainer John Hills and rider Patrick Hills.

The uncle-and-nephew combination just got up by a short head from Moyoko.
