The title-hunting jockey was seven behind Ryan Moore (90) on 83 winners at the start of the day but he cut the deficit to just three after winning four races in succession.
Hughes finished last in the first race on Lady Calantha but wasn't beaten by another rival in his next four as he won aboard Waspy (11/8 favourite), Dynastic (7/2), Griffin Point (13/8 favourite) and Cockney Fire (8/1).
Ladbrokes go 4/7 about Hughes, bet365 and Bet Victor go 1/2 and Stan James are 2/5.
Moore, not riding again until August 9, remains three clear but was eased to 7/4 by Sky Bet such was the momentum behind Hughes.
That's a top-price about Moore with Ladbrokes as short as 5/4.
David Williams of Ladbrokes said: "Hughes is closing in on Moore and all the money has been for the man of the moment at Bath.
"He was well-backed at 6/1 when the season started and Hughes seems hungrier than ever to fill the gap on his CV with a jockeys' championship."
