Roger Varian's Miguel Grau looked an interesting one in the nine-furlong handicap at Ripon and he ran a race full of promise on his first start on turf.
Owned by footballers Joey Barton and Claudio Pizarro, he improved steadily for Varian after only hinting at ability when with Marco Botti.
After running poorly on his last start 159 days previously he was on something of a retrieval mission but after coming to win the race the lack of a recent run told and he just failed to hold off the favourite Woodacre.
Compensation surely awaits.
In the feature Weatherbys Stallion Book Summer Sprint Trophy Handicap Another Wise Kid just missed out in a photo after Piper's Note got his head up on the line.
However, this was another fine effort from Paul Midgley's sprinter and he's clearly thriving at present.
He raced a tad keenly today and the drop back to a stiff five furlongs could see him back in the winner's enclosure given the rich vein of form he's currently in.
Finally, Eve Johnson Houghton's Penny Pepper made a highly pleasing debut in the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes and looks one to keep on the right side of in a similar contest.
She was a well-backed 4/1 second-favourite and did the best of those racing off the pace, staying on well to go second towards the finish.
