John Ferguson: Can land big prize with Purple Bay

It’s the middle of summer and the Flat racing scene is at it’s peak, but despite that we’ve an excellent jumps card at Market Rasen to enjoy this Saturday – it's their biggest day of the season.

The Summer Hurdle and Plate are the feature contests and this week we’ve got all the key trends for both races.

Starting with the Summer Hurdle at 1455 the race has only seen a few winning favourites in the last 12 runnings so don’t be put off if you fancy something at a bigger price, but saying that it could pay to still look towards the head of the market with seven of the last 10 winners returning 15/2 or shorter in the betting.

Trainer John Ferguson won the race 12 months ago and runs two again – Purple Bay and Honour System. Looking at the age stat then five or six-year-olds have by far the best record, winning 10 of the last 12 runnings.

Both the Ferguson runners are respected, but with PURPLE BAY a five-year-old and jockey Mikey Ennis taking off a handy 7lb, then this one could be the best call.

The Summer Plate – run over fences – at 1530 is next up and as you can see from the stats below this race has been dominated by the Peter Bowen yard – winning four of the last 12 runnings.

He runs BOOK’EM DANNO and after winning his last two races in decent fashion, as well as being a C&D winner here at Market Rasen, everything points to a big run. Add in that 10 of the last 12 winners were aged seven or older and that’s another plus for this eight-year-old and also that nine of the last 12 victors carried just 10-13 or less - Book’Em Danno carries exactly 10-13!

Have a good weekend!
