There was drama at Ludlow as the second race on the card, the toteexacta Available On All Races Novices' Limited Handicap Chase, was halted after the runners had completed around two miles of the course.

The starter could be seen waving his flag, suggesting a false start, after the field had set off seemingly in unison, but there was no flag from the recall man at the first fence and it was only after some time that the riders pulled their mounts up.

Following a stewards' inquiry, the three-mile contest was officially voided.

Berkshire trainer Pat Murphy saddled the Colin Bolger-ridden Cloudy Bob and said: "The starter waved his flag, but the assistant starter with the flag down by the first fence didn't react. He just walked away as though it was a normal start.

"The jockeys obviously didn't know the starter was flagging as he was behind them and it's outrageous nobody stopped the race until they'd jumped 12 fences and gone a circuit and a half.

"The starter has done his job to a certain extent, but I'm not sure the flag-man down by the first fence will be doing the job next time.

"Even after that, it should have been stopped a lot earlier than it was.

"The worst thing about the whole thing is that there was actually nothing wrong with the start.

"My horse was lobbing along up towards the front and jumping great when the race was stopped. It was a £12,000 race, I've dragged the owners up three hours from London and then this has happened.

"We just have to bite the bullet and get on with it, but it's very disappointing."
