Brendan Powell reflects on Hey Big Spender's win at Newcastle and looks ahead to his imminent rides this week.

Well it's certainly been a week to remember, and after all the hours in the gym during the summer getting back to fitness it's days like Saturday that make it all worthwhile.

Hey Big Spender's gutsy win in Saturday's Rehearsal Chase up at Newcastle made the trip north a memorable one after holding on by a neck to land the £22k pot. We knew we was going well at home and having taken this race a few years back off a 10lb lower mark then everything was in place for a big run.

Yes, he's not getting any younger at 10-years-old, but he's finished either first or second in 10 of his 25 runs over fences and now amassed just over £141k from those efforts over the bigger obstacles. Not bad hey?

I suspect he'll have a bit of time to get over that, but he's still entered in the Welsh Grand National on the 28th, or Colin Tizzard may well keep him in slightly easier company, perhaps in one of these veterans races later in the season.

However, it wasn't all partying after that win, well not for me anyway, as the old man had me out first thing on Sunday morning work riding at Newbury!

Hey Big Spender's victory wasn't the only thing worth shouting about last week either as last Wednesday I managed to get one of dad's up by a head (Glen Countess) at Wetherby. She's a lovely consistent mare at this level and that was her third win over fences from just 12 starts. She's actually now finished in the top three in 9 of those 12 chase outings.

Moving onto this week and I managed to finish third on Merchant Of Milan up at Southwell on Tuesday for dad. That was a much improved effort and I don't think it'll be long before he's troubling the judge.

Later in the week (Wednesday) I've got a couple of good chances for Jamie Snowden. Don't forget you can get all Jamie's daily thoughts, as well as 15 other trainers, over at my sponsors www.trainers-quotes.com.

Buxom and Centoria are the horses in question and the first-named is a horse I like a lot. She was a nice winner last time at Huntingdon and despite a 6lb rise in the ratings she's certainly going the right way and I'm expecting another bold showing.

Centoria goes in the NH Flat race at the end of the card and wasn't disgraced last time when third behind a potentially useful sort. It depends how useful Nicky Henderson's Side Step is I guess.

Beyond Wednesday it's hard to be 100% accurate on where I'll be as (and I know I say it most weeks) it depends where Joe Tizzard is too - I'll leave it to my hard-working agent Dave Roberts to sort out!

All I do know is that as we move towards Saturday then some of my old favourites could be in action with Present View, a horse I won on last time, entered at Wetherby.

Battle Group will be hoping to get back on track after refusing to race last time - I'm sure Johnny Farrelly will have done plenty of work with him this week on trying to iron that out.

If I'm not riding those then there is also a chance I could be off to Sandown to partner one of my Aintree winners of last season - Oiseau De Nuit - who's still engaged in the Tingle Creek.

He might have his work cut out to beat Sprinter Sacre (if he makes the race) though ;-) !!!!!!

Have a good week!

Brendan
