Nigel Twiston-Davies is set to rely on Viking Blond in the Coral Welsh National at Chepstow on Saturday.

Viking Blond: On track for the Welsh National

The trainer, who has a fine record in the marathon chase having won it with Earth Summit in 1997 and Bindaree in 2003, also has Major Malarkey entered for the marathon contest but he is set to miss the race as he waits for conditions to dry out.

"I think just Viking Blond will run," said Twiston-Davies.

"At least it looks like the race should be on now, anyway.

"There wouldn't be much point in running Major Malarkey in the ground, though, he needs it better.

"Viking Blond deserves a big one and he's been in good form this season. The horses are running well so I think he'll have a good chance."

Viking Blond was sent off the 6/1 favourite for the race 12 months ago having made a promising start to his chasing career only to be pulled up.

Now in his second season over fences, he bounced back to form on his seasonal reappearance over hurdles before filling third spot back over the larger obstacles at Cheltenham in November.
