Carole's Destiny: 1.00 Newbury
Robert Walford's mare made light of 18 months off the track when making a successful hurdling bow at Plumpton last time and she should strip fitter and wiser for that run. The family are big horses and her half-sister Carole's Destiny was a very good horse for Nicky Henderson. She won this race back in 2008 and Walford's charge is fancied to follow in her hoofprints, as she is proven on soft ground and she can put her experience to good use ahead of likely favourite Glorious Twelth.
Le Beau Bai: 2.40 Newbury
Richard Lee's nine-year-old won the Welsh National last season and that race will undoubtedly be his main target once again this season, however this looks another good opportunity to run well off a favourable hurdles mark. He battled back for victory at Ffos Las last time out and has no problem with conditions here; in fact the softer the better for this confirmed mudlark. He was seventh in this race last year but that was on quicker ground and he shouldn't be as big as 20/1 today.
Horse in focus
Dynaste was just one of several novice chasers who made a big impression on his chasing debut at the last Cheltenham meeting and David Pipe is putting his charge to the test again quite quickly (14 days between races). He leapt to the top of the RSA Chase ante-post betting after that success and is odds-on to cement that position with victory here. It's no cakewalk, but most of his rivals have something to prove over this trip and it will be a surprise if he doesn't impress once again.
Not every jockey will love the thought of a winter trip to a freezing cold Dunstall Park, but one man who should is jockey George Baker who has a fine record at the track. In the last five seasons he has ridden 56 winners there at a strike-rate of 17%, for a level stakes profit of +68.74. He has three booked rides at the track tonight including the "dropping in grade and dangerously well-handicapped course and distance winner" Mia's Boy, the "I'm in a terrible maiden and I can finally win" Vimiero, and the "eye-catching run last time and now into handicap company" Greenery. Sky Bet go 6/1 about a double and that can warm the cockles in this cold weather.
