Johnston sweet on Mukhmal
Mark Johnston has pinpointed the Norfolk Stakes for his impressive Lily Agnes winner Mukhmal.
A winner at Musselburgh on his debut, he appeared to face a stiff task from stall 10 at Chester in the five-furlong event on the turning track, giving weight away.
However, bounced out of the stalls by Paul Hanagan he had soon grabbed the rail and ran through the line a length and a half clear of previous winner Roudee.
"I was surprised he could defy stall 10," Johnston told Chanel 4 Racing.
"We looked at the stats and only 3.5 per cent of runners had won from there compared to something like 23-25 per cent from stall one.
"The odds were stacked against him and I didn't think he could do it, so I was doubly surprised that he did.
"The Norfolk is his target, I don't think he'll run before then.
"He's a proven speedster and he should like the stiff track."
