I’m looking forward to the three days of the Newmarket July Meeting – it’s always a tremendous fixture.

We start with George Bowen in the Portland Place Properties July Stakes on Thursday. I was happy with his debut win at Carlisle. They weren’t good enough to lead him that day and he just got lonely in front. In the end he’s had to learn to battle – which is no bad thing – and while he needs to step up here, he might just do that.

We’ve two in the boylesports.com Download Our App Handicap. We’d struggled to get Our Gabrial going but took the blinkers and visors off last time and he duly trotted up! It just goes to show headgear doesn’t always work. This is another step up for him but he has a very low weight.

Ventura Quest ran okay first time back. If he stays I think he could run a smart race. He has a great attitude and always tries very hard.

Lacing is a filly we like and she runs in the Peter Silvester Memorial EBF Stallions Maiden Fillies' Stakes. I’m surprised she has been beaten twice. She does everything right at home, but we’d like to see her get her head in front on the track now.

Parbold has had a frustrating year – he should possibly have won both at Newmarket in the King Charles II Stakes and Epsom in the Surrey Stakes, but these things happen and it was no-one’s fault. A mile will suit in the Hastings Direct Sir Henry Cecil Stakes and he just needs the breaks.

Arctic Feeling has been a little in and out and never travelled at Epsom two starts ago when I was half-thinking that might be his race. He then went off too fast at Carlisle last time but these things can happen. He’s in great order ahead of the Frontline Bathrooms Handicap and is very well handicapped so it would be no shock to see him bounce back. Any rain would help.
