Richard Fahey: Up for the Cup
Gabrial's Star won for the column on Friday, now Richard Fahey takes us through his Saturday team.
There’s a huge field for the 7.5 Million Totescoop6 Victoria Cup Heritage Handicap at Ascot on Saturday and it’s a lottery race but we have two decent chances.
I thought Heaven’s Guest ran well the other day and definitely wants stepping back up to seven furlongs. He won’t mind cut in the ground, loves these big handicaps and goes well at the track. He’d have to be a 110 horse to win it – and I’m not sure he is – but he’s ready to go.
So is Flyman who has had this as his target for some time. He went up six pounds for winning at Doncaster last time – then two more when the second came out and won subsequently. That doesn’t help but he’s in great order and I hope he’s going to run well for his owner.
Woodbridge is a funny sort of horse. I don’t know what his best trip is. He’s over a mile in the Odds On Favourite DG Taxis 01159500500 Handicap at Nottingham but is a half-brother to Overturn so is hard to read. He’s dangerous to leave alone as he has the ability to go well in this grade but his work is very in and out, good one day, not so the next.
Her Red Devil didn’t stay at Nottingham last time so drops back to a mile in the ABF The Soldiers' Charity Handicap at Thirsk. I’d expect her to run well as she’s in good form.
We also run top weight Kalahari Kingdom who has plenty of ability and a bit of a mind of his own. This isn’t a good race and I’d expect both to perform with credit – they need to in this grade.
Peraruda is a tough little filly who tries very hard. She’s a homebred and I’d love her to win the ebfstallions.com EBF Maiden Stakes at Warwick for her owners. She’s very genuine and tries hard which is always a help and shaped with promise on her debut at Wolverhampton.
Robin O’Ryan bought Miss Van Gogh for a friend of his and she didn’t cost a lot of money. She’s a nice filly who shows a bit at home. She’ll definitely win races but will be better for her debut in the Dine In The 1707 Restaurant Maiden Auction Stakes at Warwick.
Diamond Blue ran a good race at Ayr last time where it seemed as though the winner joined in at halfway, he hosed up. However we were best of the rest and would have a chance in the Dick Peacock Sprint Handicap. 16 is potentially a good draw if it remains good ground but if it turns very soft she might not run.
Finally Regiment goes in the New Citroen C1 Handicap at Warwick. He ran a good, solid, race on his reappearance and we’ve been pleased with him since. We feel he’s quite well handicapped so you’d hope he has a chance.
