Following a spate of late non-runners, our Irish Eyes column has just the one selection for this afternoon's card at Naas.

Ned Buntline is favourite for the Irish Stallion Farms E.B.F. Novice Chase in the absence of Mozoltov. Noel Meade's charge did impress on his second chase start at Navan on December 21st, but Meade has since run 20 horses, all of whom have failed to finish in the first two. When you consider that nine of those twenty started at 5/1 or less, it gives you a better idea of what we're talking about here. Furthermore, only one of the twenty finished closer than five lengths off the winner and that was Ipsos Du Berlais, who ran a cracker to finish third behind Rockyaboya at Leopardstown.

Consequently, it may pay to look elsewhere in this event and Tim Doyles Mallowney is worth a shot given the Meade team are enduring a 'quiet spell'.

Mallowney was no match for Mozoltov on his first start over fences at Fairyhouse but it was still a decent debut and it must be remembered that he was rated two pounds above the favourite here over hurdles yet he gets six pounds today! He will enjoy these conditions and is the value to upset the short-priced Ned Buntline.

The Grade Three Slaney Hurdle should, in theory go to Briar Hill. However at 1/4 and giving away a seven pound penalty over this trip, we are happy to sit this one out.

Mallowney, 1.00 Naas
