denman scores with ease

Denman looked much more like the budding superstar his reputation suggests he is with a highly accomplished display in the toteplacepot Novices' Chase at Newbury.

Sent off the 1-3 favourite against just two rivals, the seven-year-old had been a shade workmanlike in two of his three chasing outings but was soon clear in front under Ruby Walsh.

He was clever at most fences and came home as he liked, a distance clear of Mr Pointment, who had followed him from afar all the way round.

Standin Obligation put in a tame effort to be a remote third.

Trainer Paul Nicholls said: "He's going the right way doing this job and that's what he's made for.

"Ruby said that was the best he has ever felt. He schooled for the first time since his last run yesterday and he's never looked as well.

"He's having a good blow and will come on for this. A month between now and Cheltenham is ideal.

"He's learning all the time and next year when he runs in all of the big races, he will have all this experience behind him."
