Penzance has a bright future after Triumph win.
TRIUMPH PAIR HAVE BRIGHT FUTURES
By Dave Ord, Cheltenham
2.00: A cracking renewal of the Triumph Hurdle with the market
leaders dominating. Penzance justified stable confidence to win well and
is an exciting prospect. He took a valuable length off Faasel at the last
and that proved the difference with the runner-up showing great tenacity to
close within a head of his rival at the line. Both are interesting long-term
prospects but five-year-olds are notoriously difficult to place in their
second season. Cerium travelled strongly and jumped to the front at the
second last but didn't come up the hill as well as the principals. There are
more races in him. Akilak overcame trouble in running to claim third. He
wouldn't have won but remains one to keep on the right side of. He found
this ground plenty lively enough. The presence of Phar Bleu in fifth and
Strangely Brown sixth gives the form a very solid look.
2.35: A new race and a good performance from Moulin Riche, who was
always going well and ran on strongly to score in impressive style. There
are a glut of promising staying novices around at present but he is clearly
up there with the best of them. Over The Creek has progressed throughout
the season and again ran a cracker, coming from off the pace to claim second
up the hill. Favourite Brewster was swamped for pace at the second last
but again fought tenaciously to the line. He has a tremendous attitude and
remains a fantastic long-term prospect. So is Thames who raced in snatches
at times but was back on the bridle three out. He eventually finished fourth
and has all the makings of a top notch staying chaser.
3.15 Kicking King confirmed himself the best staying chaser this
season with a convincing win. He travelled supremely well throughout
before jumping into contention at the final ditch. He fenced fluently from
there and never looked like cracking when put under pressure by Take The
Stand. He clearly relished this good ground and is going to take all the
beating in similar contests next season. The runner-up ran a remarkable
race and was another to bounce off the fast ground. He will not be easy to
place now though. Sir Rembrandt would have preferred more juice in the
racing surface but the demands of this race are ideal for him. The
proximity of the runner-up and Royal Auclair in fourth suggests we should
not get too carried away by the literal form of the race but it was the
style of the win that excited most. Celestial Gold made too many mistakes
to be competitive and Strong Flow found little having travelled well to
three out. He is another best on softer ground. Beef Or Salmon was the
disappointment of the race and was never travelling or jumping. It seems
this race will continue to elude him.
4.00: This looked a decent renewal of the Foxhunters and Sleeping
Night justified string stable confidence to win well. He was always
travelling strongly and overcame the persistant challenge of Foly Peasant
and his rider's saddle slipping to hold on. He will continue to be hard to
beat in this sphere. The runner-up ran a tremendous race to justify his
hefty purchase price while in third Placid Man rewarded his sustained market
support with a bold show. He would have finished closer too but for missing
out the third last and second last. Lord Atterbury was the main market
rival to the winner but after leading and travelling well he was beaten when
making the last of a few errors at the final fence. If he heads to the
Martell Grand National again he goes there in better form than 12 months ago
when he was to run so well.
4.40: Fota Island landed several good bets with a smooth win. He
went for home approaching the final fence and powered up the hill to score
in style. This was only his eighth start over fences and he is open to more
improvement. Bambi L'Orme has plenty of ability and ran a cracker in
second. He is undeniably on a decent mark but hasn't always impressed with
his attitude. Nicky Henderson was desperate to win this race and his trio
all ran well. Carriciola was given a patient ride but came home well. He has
the potential go further over fences. Tysou seems handicapped to win a race
and he responded to strong pressure to take fourth. However the biggest
eyecatcher was stablemate Greenhope who ran a terrific race for a novice. He
battled on well once headed at a course that doesn't necessarily play to his
strengths. He could be of interest at Aintree.
5.20: A seriously competitive handicap as ever and a stunning return to form from Fontanesi. He had dropped in the handicap but was hard to fancy on this year's evidence and must have been one of the less celebrated Pipe winners in the stands for some time.
Stance ran a great race but was outpaced from the last. while Borora ran a remarkable race but his form entitled him to run better than his starting price suggested.
Grande Jete continued the trend of Nicky Henderson horses running well this week - he had gone a length clear when hitting the last and valuable momentum had been lost. Calatagan ran well for a long way under a positive ride as did Crossbow Creek at a course that may not play ideally to his strengths. The gamble on Beechcourt never looked like being landed as he folded tamely having travelled well to three out.
