IT'S A CRUISE FOR DABIROUN
By
Nina Carberry became the latest member of the famous Irish racing clan to get
her name on the Cheltenham Festival roll of honour when she steered Dabiroun to
victory in the inaugural running of the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices' Handicap
Hurdle on Tuesday.
Her father Tommy and brother Paul have both enjoyed considerable success at
the prestigious fixture and Miss Carberry showed plenty of the family polish to
open her account at the course.
She brought the Paul Nolan-trained 20-1 chance with a well-timed run to lead
at the final flight before pushing her mount clear to beat At Your Request by an
easy eight lengths.
Miss Carberry, 20, said: "That's unbelievable. I just came here today to
enjoy myself and it's been great.
"I was very confident coming down the hill. I had most of them covered and
the one in front was the only one to beat. Someone shouted 'Go on Nina, you've
won', so I went. When I looked round there was nobody there.
"It felt very emotional when I came back in in front of the crowds - it was
brilliant.
"It compares big-time with my other wins - I've had 22 now. This was my
second ride at the Festival.
"Paul didn't give me any advice, but dad did. Paul came over and said well
done."
Dabiroun was winning his first hurdle and clearly appreciated the drier
conditions.
"He's a revelation on better ground," said trainer Nolan. "He has always
worked well on better ground at home and this is the first time he's had it in a
race. He's top-class on good ground."
