MAGERN BACK ON FESTIVAL TRAIL

By Carl Lewellyn

I was up at Wetherby on Saturday and made the journey pay off with a treble which started with Red Georgie in the opening novice hurdle.

We have always thought a lot of him but he disappointed last time at the track and was obviously not right on the day.

He jumped well this time, although a bit to the right, and will be better on a right-handed track.

I do not know how good the race was but the runner-up had a bit of form and was decent on the Flat and mine has won with a little bit in hand.

Hopefully he can now go on to better things.

We had a few horses run below par at the time he performed badly at Wetherby so maybe he was a little under the weather but this effort clearly has him back to his best.

He is entered in the 2m5f and three-mile novice hurdles at Cheltenham. The latter would probably suit him better and if the ground came up good he would have an outside chance.

However at the moment he is well below that standard and would have to improve.

I was on Ollie Magern in the big novice chase and overall I was happy with his performance.

His jumping was not as spectacular as it has been in the past - in the Hennessy he was absolutely brilliant.

The other day he was a little hesitant at a few fences and was possibly just thinking about his mishap at Cheltenham the week before.

That frightened him a bit so we had to build up his confidence a little.

I don't think he will run again before the Royal & SunAlliance Chase at the Festival so we will take it easy with him for a few weeks and then do plenty of schooling.

He got into a duel up front with King Harald who I think is quite a good horse of Mark Bradstock's in his own right despite being rated inferior to Ollie Magern.

We went a bit quick early on and my horse proably did a bit too much in the first part of the race. In the end though he has won nicely as we were hoping for.

He did get a bit tired towards but the ground was tacky enough and I suppose that was to be expected really.

I completed my treble on Mouseski for Paul Nicholls.

He is an 11-year-old but only had 10-1 and had some good form on softer ground.

The race has probably turned out not to be that good with Amberleigh House running over a trip short of his best, Royal Emperor not in top form again and Royal Altaza having not really shown anything since leaving France.

But my horse did win very well and you could not ask any more of him.

I partnered Cloud Venture for Simon Sherwood in the bumper and I thnik that he will be a lovely horse in time.

He has a nice attitude but was a little bit free, similar to Olllie Magern, in the first half of the race and then did not save much for the finish.

I was told that he is quite spirited and gets excited at home and that is probably what happened in the race.

Once he learns to settle and relax he will be a nice prospect.

I saw Self Defence win the Agfa Hurdle at Sandown and he is high-class on his day.

He has shown signs of temperament in the past but seems to be growing up a bit now.

He travelled and jumped well and held Rooster Booster at the finish.

Our Champion Hurdle performers have been a little bit disappointing this season and he could be one of the main contenders to try and stop the Irish runners who seem to have a stranglehold on the race.

Rooster Booster was not seen at his best as this was a muddling affair.

I would not write him off for the Champion Hurdle yet. With a fast pace I think he will be right there turning for home - whether he can stay on up the hill though remains to be seen.

Rule Supreme won the Irish Hennessy on Sunday and jumped well on the soft ground.

His run at Windsor before Christmas behind Baracouda was a good effort and he was running a big race when he fell last time out.

What he beat on Sunday is a little bit questionable as Beef Or Salmon was not at his best on the day.

Rule Supreme was a Cheltenham Festival winner last year but whether his jumping would stand up on quicker ground in the Gold Cup could be an issue.

You could possibly write this run off by Beef Or Salmon but the question mark over him is also whether his jumping will stand up.

He is fine on soft ground in smaller fields when they take more time but they take no prisoners in the Gold Cup on better going.

Looking ahead to the Grand National at Aintree, Baron Windrush has been given 10-7 at this stage which is a winning weight.

Anything below 11-0 is attractive as over that mark means that you always have something improving below you to worry about.

Baron Windrush is a big horse and I would not be worried about him carrying that weight around Liverpool.
