BARON'S BIG WARWICK BONUS
By Carl Llewellyn
I won on Baron Windrush in the valuable totesport Warwick Classic Chase on Saturday and we just thought on soft ground over that trip he struggled to see out the distance at Cheltenham last time. So we decided that this time it would be wise to take our time on him and creep into the race - which worked very well. He travelled nicely into the straight and I always thought that he had a real chance from a long way out. He is good horse and he only had 10-3 up against some exposed rivals but is clearly at the right end of the handicap. He has come out of the race fine and the obvious target now is the Scottish National. The trouble is that at that time of year the ground can get a bit fast and we would not want to risk him on that. So we may be looking at the Midlands National at Uttoxeter or maybe the four mile amateur event at the Cheltenham Festival. He is quite a big, long horse and can find it difficult when he gets in close to a fence but as time has gone on he has got better with his jumping. The other day was probably the best he has been. I was on Lady Zephyr behind No Refuge in the Grade 2 novices' hurdle and I am sure that the winner is a good horse and will go for the new three-mile novice event at Cheltenham. Lady Zephyr ran a really good race but doesn't want to hit the front too soon. I probably got left on my own a little bit out towards the middle of the track and a bit more company until later on would have suited her better. But she has run a good race. Plans are possibly the Mares' Final at Newbury but she might have a lot of weight for that. Connections will also be thinking about the Cheltenham Festival and the Royal & SunAlliance Hurdle. Petite Margot was fifth in the Pertemps Qualifier on the same card and the idea is to probably go for the final of the series. She had a lot of weight - 11-12 - and is a very small mare so I think that she ran a great race giving so much weight away to the likes of Strong Flow. The winner (Celtic Son) looks like he could make up to a Stayers' Hurdle type in time also. Petite Margot is entered again at Haydock on Saturday and whether she takes up that engagement has yet to be decided. She is a very tough mare who is improving all the time and will have a couple more runs before the Festival. I thought that Strong Flow ran a good race as it is very difficult to come back from chasing to a decent hurdle race like that. He has run adequately I would say - a good effort without being sensational. With the weight he had he would have had to be in the first three to hold out any hope for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. There is nice gap now between Warwick and his next intended target, the Aon Chase at Newbury, and connections obviously think he is going to improve enough to take a hand in the finish of that race.
