Gazump books his place at Cheltenham.
LLEWELLYN GAZUMPS OPPOSITION
By
Nigel Twiston-Davies supplemented his team for the Cheltenham Festival by one
after Gazump took the opening contest at Newbury.
A change of tactics worked the trick aboard the 13-2 winner, who was patiently
ridden by Carl Llewellyn, leading after the third-last fence in the Vodafone
Novices' Handicap Chase as favourite Figaro du Rocher made a bad mistake.
Keeping on well for pressure, Gazump stayed on to hold the challenge of
Glengarra by a length and three-quarters with the one-paced 13-8 favourite a
neck back in third.
"He is in the Jewson Novices' Handicap Chase at Cheltenham and he'll go there
now," said the winning trainer.
"The advantage of having an old jockey like Carl on board is that he knows
when they're going too quick and he wisely decided to take his time.
"Once he hit the front I thought he'd hold on because he stays forever
really."
