Bookmakers came out on top again on day two of the Cheltenham Festival, with
just one favourite winning on a seven-race card.
The layers had a resounding success yesterday, and were celebrating once more
after 25-1 shot Rule Supreme landed the Royal & SunAlliance Chase with 11-8
hotpot Our Vic turned over.
Odds-on favourite Moscow Flyer then crashed out of the Queen Mother Champion
Chase and the well-backed Martinstown never landed a blow in the closing
Weatherbys Champion Bumper.
The Irish did manage to land a touch, though, with the victory of Total
Enjoyment in the bumper. The mare had been backed from 20-1 into 7-1 after
working well at Leopardstown two weeks ago, and Cashmans laid a bet of £2,000 at
16-1.
"It was another good day for us, and to get the first two favourites beat was
a huge result," said bookmaker Paddy Power.
"Inglis Drever (7-4) coming second was a good result, but we had laid Our Vic
and were glad to get that beat.
"It was obvious that Moscow Flyer or Azertyuiop was going to win and
thankfully, Azertyuiop was the better result for us. That was also another nail
in the coffin for the multiple bets on the reigning champions, with two of the
four having now been beaten.
"There was only one winning favourite (Native Emperor, 5-1) and that was in a
race that punters wouldn't really get involved in."
The tote reported turnover of £3,609,512, up 16% on last year, and one Irish
punter is sure to be cheering on Tusk in tomorrow's JCB Triumph Hurdle after
placing a £220 yankee with the firm.
After the victories of Fork Lightning at 8-1, Fundamentalist (10-1) and
Monkerhostin (9-1), he has Tusk going for him at 8-1 and stands to win £264,000
on the concluding day of the meeting.
"We will be cheering on Best Mate with everyone else tomorrow," said
Balthazar Fabricius of Ladbrokes. "He has been unbackable ante-post and is a
£40,000 winner at this stage.
"We are already laying Azertyuiop for next year's Queen Mother at 5-2. We
cannot split Pipe and Nicholls in the trainers' championship, with both at
5-6."
