Jonjo O'Neill took the Pertemps Final for the second consecutive year as 50/1 shot Creon pounced late to grab the spoils.
There were eight horses in with a chance of some sort at the final obstacle but it was Timmy Murphy who found a great response from his mount to power up the hill towards the centre of the track and trump them all.
The winner has been called some names in the past but seemed to relish the hurly burly of the event and put his best foot forward.
G V A Ireland (14/1), Alexanderthegreat (25/1) and His Nibs (25/1) all ran their hearts out to fill the places in a finish which saw the first four home covered by just a couple of lengths.
O'Neill said: "He's a bit of a character, but everything went right for him
today. You couldn't plan it again, but Timmy rode him brilliantly."
McManus added: "He ran well in the race last year and there must be some
juice in the ground for him to have won."
When asked if he had backed the winner at 50-1, he replied: "I wasn't tempted
and I wouldn't have been even if he had been at 500-1."
