Picture Heart Shaped - much to prove.

OCTOBER 23 - JUVENILE FILLIES TURF

Consequence (Tr: Shug McGaughey; ex rider Jennifer Patterson) - Consequence galloped 1 1/4m under Jennifer Patterson Thursday morning to tune up for her first start over the Santa Anita grass course in Friday's Juvenile Fillies Turf.

"I think she'll love this hard turf and I think she's good enough," trainer Shug McGaughey said. "She's the kind of filly who likes to skip along. I think she'll like this kind of turf."

Consequence, who registered a bullet 4f workout over the turf course last Sunday, will be ridden by John Velazquez.

Emmy Darling (Tr: John Sadler; ex rider: Enrique Alfarez) - Ike and Dawn Thrash's Emmy Darling concluded her training for Friday's Juvenile Fillies Turf by galloping 1 1/4m under exercise rider Enrique Alfarez.

Rafael Bejarano will ride Emmy Darling for the first time and break from post position five in the full field of 12.

Trainer John Sadler was asked what he would like to see from Emmy Darling in her turf debut Friday.

"I'd just like to see her relax," Sadler said. "She's got a good draw."

Heart Shaped (Tr: Aidan O'Brien) - Trainer Aidan O'Brien said that Heart Shaped has much to prove Friday. The chestnut filly, bred by Brushwood Stables, has a maiden win from five starts and has had problems at the start of her last three races.

"You're not sure whether she's going to get the trip or not," O'Brien said. "She came back after a long break in the Cheveley Park and ran well, but she has to step up. She has to improve and she has to get a mile."

Heart Shaped and the other seven Breeders' Cup horses trained by O'Brien cantered a mile on the main track Thursday morning.

Internallyflawless (Tr: Bob Baffert; ex. rider: Sarah Cillie ) - Charles Fipke's Internallyflawless, a maiden winner on the turf last month at Santa Anita, galloped 1 1/2m under exercise rider Sarah Cillie on Thursday morning.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Internallyflawless is on the also-eligible list for the race and will need one defection to draw into the main body of the race. Victor Espinoza has the mount if she runs.

Renda (Tr: Juan Arias) - While Renda is a Portuguese name meaning "wealth," representing owner Richard Rowan's love for all things Brazilian, the filly also has a strong Panama connection.

Her jockey, Sebastian Madrid, 42, grew up on a farm in his native Panama and enrolled in his country's famous jockey school in 1980. He completed the two-year course and rode races in that country for three years before coming to the United States.

Since then, he has had success in Florida, Kentucky, Ohio, Louisiana, Illinois, New Jersey and even Saudi Arabia. Madrid has ridden in one other Breeders' Cup race, finishing fourth aboard Supah Gem in the 1992 Juvenile Fillies at Gulfstream Park .

Attending the jockey school at the same time as Madrid was Renda's trainer, Juan Arias. Arias is also from Panama and went through the program that produced some of the country's top riders, including Laffit Pincay, Jr., Jorge Velasquez, Alex Solis and countless others.

Now 43, Arias retired from race riding in 1990 after 10 years in the saddle. He spent several years working as an assistant to various trainers in Florida and even worked a stint for trainer Wesley Ward in California.

Arias employs some exercise riders at his Calder base in Miami, Fla. but he still gets on some of his own horses, including Renda, and believes that his ability to ride them is an advantage.

"It's definitely an advantage," said Arias, who weighs 150 pounds. "Getting on them allows to me know things I may not otherwise know. I don't have to get on them, but I love riding."

Renda's owner Richard Rowan added, "Plus, as a former jockey, when he watches them race, he knows if he they got the right ride or not."

Saucey Evening (Tr: Graham Motion; ex rider: Alice Clapham) - The Graham Motion-trained Saucey Evening galloped 1 1/4m Thursday under exercise rider Alice Clapham. Saucey Evening, who captured the California Cup Juvenile Fillies in her most recent start, will be equipped with blinkers for the first time in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

"It was something we always wanted to do, but there was never a good time to do it," trainer Graham Motion said. "When she first ran at Del Mar she was very green, shying away from the grandstand. We felt like it cost her the race, but I was leery about putting them on the next time because, she was so sharp in the race.

"When she ran the other day, when she won the Cal Cup race, Garrett said she was much better but still a little green. She propped a bit at the wire, so we felt we should do it."

Saucey Evening, who'll wear "quarter-cup" blinkers, will make her return to turf racing after three straight starts on synthetic surfaces. The daughter of More Than Ready, who will be ridden by Garrett Gomez, won her debut on turf at Colonial Downs in June.

Sugar Mom (Tr: Wayne Catalano) - Sugar Mom raced for a $30,000 tag just a few short months ago, and Friday's race will be her first start on turf, but trainer Wayne Catalano believes that Sugar Mom has a chance to win the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

"We think we have a legitimate shot, or we wouldn't be here," Catalano said.

Sugar Mom drew post position eight in the field of 12, and although all three of her wins have come from off the pace, Catalano hopes that she'll be more forwardly placed on Friday.

"It (turf) is an unknown surface for her, but the way she worked over it a couple weeks ago has me thinking that she'll be able to show a little more speed," Catalano explained.
