Dearest Trickski (Tr: John Sadler) - Tom Mankiewicz's Dearest Trickski put in her final exercise for Friday's Sentient Flight Group Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint by galloping 1 1/4m on Thursday morning at Santa Anita under exercise rider Jose Alfarez.
Trainer John Sadler, who has saddled eight starters in the World Championships, will send out Dearest Trickski as the first of his seven-horse contingent for this year's event.
"None of my horses running tomorrow will go out in the morning," said Sadler, who has three horses running Friday and four Saturday.
Asked what he would like to see out of Dearest Trickski in the 7f race, Sadler said: "Be in front. I know there are a lot of other guys in there looking to do the same thing."
Mike Smith, who has ridden Dearest Trickski to four wire-to-wire victories including two at the 7f distance, has the mount Friday and will break from post position nine.
Dream Rush (Tr: Will Phipps II) - One of the confirmed speed horses in the Filly and Mare Sprint will be the multiple stakes-winning filly Dream Rush, now trained by 37-year-old Breeders' Cup rookie Will Phipps.
Jockey Kent Desormeaux was aboard the 4yo Wild Rush filly for the first time Thursday morning, leading her on a 1m gallop and 1m jog on the main track at Santa Anita.
"She likes it,'' said Phipps, who picked up the filly from trainer Rick Violette in August after spending five years as an assistant to Bill Mott. "This track, in my opinion, seems to be the closest to Tapeta. She ran well on that surface at Presque Isle Downs (3rd in the Presque Isle Masters)."
A former steeplechase rider, Phipps also spent time in the barns of Tom Voss and Jimmy Day. Phipps and Chad Brown (Maram, Juvenile Fillies Turf) are among the newest trainers with horses in the Breeders' Cup this year.
"I kind of like being under the radar," he said. "I've been here with Bill before and that was a treat. On your own, it's awesome. It's a real honor to be here with these fine horsemen."
Indian Blessing (Tr: Bob Baffert; ex. rider: Janell Gruss) - Hal and Patti Earnhardt's Indian Blessing stood quietly in the stretch under exercise rider Janell Gruss for about five minutes Thursday morning before beginning her 1 1/2m exercise for trainer Bob Baffert.
John Velazquez, who rode Indian Blessing to a 5 ¼-length victory in the Prioress and a seven-length score in the 7f Test, has the mount Friday and will break from post position five.
Baffert was asked what he would like to see from Indian Blessing on Friday.
"A win!" Baffert exclaimed. "Just give her her head, and let her do the rest."
A victory by Indian Blessing would make her the first Breeders' Cup World Championships participant to win two different races in the 25 years of the event. Indian Blessing won the Juvenile Fillies last year.
Indyanne (Tr: Greg Gilchrist) - Trainer Greg Gilchrist declared David and Jill Heerensperger's 3yo filly Indyanne from the Filly & Mare Sprint on Thursday morning after discovering that she had a slight temperature that started on Wednesday.
"Her temperature elevated about one degree over normal," said Gilchrist on Thursday. "She missed some of her feed and she was coughing a little...on a scale of one to ten, probably about a three. In people terms, it's like she has a sore throat and could probably go to work, but she's just not quite herself. In these kinds of races, you can't be that way. We have to do the right thing by the horse."
Indyanne had vanned to Santa Anita on Tuesday from her northern California base at Golden Gate Fields. The trip was extended by about two hours because of heavy traffic due to an accident on the freeway.
"It could be a little case of shipping fever," Gilchrist said. "She may have had something going on that we didn't know about, and all that time in the van just didn't help."
Intangaroo (Tr: Gary Sherlock) - The Tom Genther Farms-owned Intangaroo, winner of three Grade 1 handicaps this year (the Santa Monica at Santa Anita, Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs and Ballerina at Saratoga) galloped 1 1/4m on her first morning at Santa Anita after having shipped from Hollywood Park on Wednesday.
"I've had eight weeks to get her ready and we haven't had a blip on the radar screen," trainer Gary Sherlock said. "She knows she's here to run. She's ready, and she'll show up."
Jazzy (Tr: Mark A. Hennig) - One of three fillies in the Filly & Mare Sprint without a win this year, Jazzy would appear to be one of the longest shots in this field, but trainer Mark Hennig said he saw enough in her last race to give this race a try.
"She's a lightly raced filly," said Hennig of the 6yo Argentine bred, who has made the races only 16 times. "She's run better, obviously, on the grass (4-for-12), but she is a graded stakes winner on the dirt (2007 Gallant Bloom). That one race we ran her on an artificial surface, she seemed to really take to it well (4th in Presque Isle Masters). And she didn't have the greatest of trips that day."
Hennig is hoping that with all the speed in the race, Jazzy can make a better showing than last year when she failed to beat an opponent in the slop at Monmouth.
"She's a filly that's going to be coming on the end," said Hennig, who jogged her 1m and galloped 1m before walking the paddock Thursday.
"In the Breeders' Cup sprints, especially going seven-eighths, that's not a bad thing to be. I'd rather have one coming from behind in this race than one that had to have the lead."
Lady Sprinter (Tr: Juan Reviriego) - Lady Sprinter, purchased for $35,000 at the 2005 September yearling sale, jogged 1m on Thursday morning and then cooled out under the watchful eye of trainer Juan Reviriego. While the filly is an American-bred, she has made her nine previous starts in Argentina, winning eight of them.
The daughter of Orientate has twice defeated male rivals, but according to the South American media, who have been frequent visitors to her barn, Friday's race will be her toughest to date.
Magnificience (Tr: Bruce Headley) - Wrapping up her work for Friday's Filly & Mare Sprint, the 4yo daughter of Stormy Atlantic, galloped 7f on the Santa Anita training track Thursday.
The Bruce Headley trainee is owned by John Sikura, Irwin Molasky and Tom Lenner and will be ridden by David Flores, who has been aboard for all four of her 2008 starts, including an allowance win on May 18 at Hollywood Park.
Miraculous Miss (Tr: Steve Klesaris) - Trainer Steve Klesaris admits there's not much in the way of strategizing for Friday's run in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.
"Miraculous Miss is a closer, so the (10) post is really of little consequence," Klesaris said. "That's her style, and her style is not going to change."
The defection of Indyanne could potentially "take a little steam" out of the early fractions.
"We're hoping for a hot pace," Klesaris said. "That's really all we can do."
Ventura (Tr: Robert Frankel) - Ventura, a homebred daughter of Chester House, galloped 1 1/4m Thursday morning in her final preparations for Friday's Filly & Mare Sprint. Trainer Robert Frankel noted that she would school in the paddock Thursday also.
Ventura is a six-time winner in her short but very promising career. She's also been second five times, showing that she certainly knows how to try.
She has currently earned $819,470, and if she finishes first ($540,000) or second ($200,000) in the 7f feature, she'll become a millionaire.
Ventura drew post 12 in the 14-horse lineup and will be ridden by Garrett Gomez.
Zaftig (Tr: Jimmy Jerkens) - Acorn winner Zaftig breezed through the Santa Anita stretch to finish off her morning gallop under exercise rider Kelvin Pahal Thursday.
Trainer Jimmy Jerkens said he timed Zaftig's final 2f tune-up for Friday's Filly & Mare Sprint breezing in 23. Jerkens' clocking of his filly's stretch blowout may set her up for a fast finish on Friday.
"There's a lot of speed in there. I'd guess she'd be four or five (lengths) off the pace," Jerkens said. "It doesn't seem like it's a track where the speed keeps on going. Maybe if a couple of them can get going fast, they can set it up for someone off the pace."
Rafael Bejarano will ride Zaftig for the first time in the Filly & Mare Sprint.
