Lewis Michael (Tr: Wayne Catalano) - Lewis Michael, the 5yo son of Rahy will make his third Breeders' Cup appearance on Saturday. Eleventh in the 2006 Sprint at Churchill Downs, the Wayne Catalano trainee finished fifth in last year's Dirt Mile over a sloppy Monmouth strip.
"That was a nightmare," Catalano said of the experience. "The weather was bad, the track was a mess. We didn't have any reservations (about running). It was an unknown. You don't know until you try. We just hoped to have good results, and it didn't turn out that way."
Lewis Michael came out of the race with "an ankle issue." Following several months of rest, Catalano readied him for another run at the Breeders' Cup.
"We had him fit to run in June, but thought it was best to wait for the Sea o'Erin (Arlington Park, July 26, 1m on turf)," Catalano explained. "We figured he wouldn't be at his best that day (finished fourth), but it was good to get that one under him."
Also pre-entered in the Sprint, Lewis Michael has a first preference in the Dirt Mile.
"We'd run good (in the Sprint), but in that race we'd need the right race shape, and deep closers haven't done too well on that track (Pro-Ride)," Catalano said. "He has the right running style for the Mile. He can lay closer, and get the right trip."
Eibar Coa has the riding assignment on Lewis Michael.
"Mr. (Frank) Calabrese (owner) picks the jockeys," Catalano said.
My Pal Charlie (Tr: Al Stall Jr.) - Super Derby winner My Pal Charlie galloped 1m on Monday at Keeneland and will join a large contingent of Midwest horses on a Wednesday flight to California. On Saturday, he breezed an easy 4f in 50 4/5 in his final workout before the race.
"He's doing well," said trainer Al Stall Jr.
Jockey Victor Espinoza has the mount in the Dirt Mile.
Rebellion (Tr: Graham Motion; ex. rider: Alice Clapham) - The Graham Motion-trained 5yo galloped a mile over Santa Anita's main track under assistant trainer Alice Clapham Monday morning.
Rebellion was pre-entered for two races, but he's being prepared for the Dirt Mile, instead of the Turf Sprint.
"He's hard to place, because he's a seven-furlong horse," Motion said from his barn at Maryland's Fair Hill Training Center. "We're hoping we can stretch him out to a mile. The mile and a sixteenth was probably a stretch in his race at Del Mar, but he's been training at Santa Anita for a month, so we're hopeful that he'll get the distance."
Rebellion, who finished eighth in last year's Mile over a soft Monmouth Park turf course, has excelled over synthetic racing surfaces, winning four times and finishing second three times in nine starts.
Edgar Prado, who rode him to victory in the Commonwealth Stakes over Keeneland's Polytrack surface in the spring, has the mount on Rebellion for a second time.
Slew's Tiznow (Tr: Doug O'Neill; ex. rider Tony Romero) - The 3yo colt jogged 1 ½m Monday at Hollywood Park under exercise rider Tony Romero.
"I got him in May," said trainer Doug O'Neill of the Tiznow-Hepatica colt who won the El Cajon Stakes in August at Del Mar off a 10-month layoff.
"We pointed him to Del Mar, got rolling and everything came up perfect," continued O'Neill. "We thought about running him back in the Super Derby but it was too much of a squeeze."
Rafael Bejarano retains the mount on the colt, who will be shipped to Santa Anita on Thursday.
Slew's Tizzy (Tr: Doug O'Neill; ex. rider: Sal Santiago) - The 4yo colt, a full brother to Slew's Tiznow, galloped 1 ½m Monday at Hollywood Park under exercise rider Sal Santiago.
"I got him in February, and he had a piece of a splint bone removed in March," explained trainer Doug O'Neill of a seven-month break before the colt returned to win an allowance race at Santa Anita on Sept. 26.
Joel Rosario retains the mount on the colt, who will join Slew's Tiznow in shipping to Santa Anita Thursday.
"Both are big, strong and all racehorse," said O'Neill of the Joseph Lacombe Stable homebreds. "They're both very powerful with a beautiful way of going."
Surf Cat (Tr: Bruce Headley) - Trainer Bruce Headley is hoping his 6yo son of Sir Cat can turn a fourth-place finish in Santa Anita's Goodwood into a victory in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.
The trainer will hone the horse's skills with a 4f blowout Wednesday on the way to Saturday's race. In the meantime, Surf Cat will gallop 1 ¼ m Tuesday as he did Monday.
Surf Cat will be ridden by his regular jockey, David Flores.
Two Step Salsa (Tr: Julio Canani) - Two Step Salsa, four-time winning son of Petionville walked Monday following a 5f workout Sunday in 1:01 2/5 over the Santa Anita main track in preparation for a run in the Dirt Mile.
Trainer Julio Canani said the Everest Stables homebred will jog and gallop up to the race, and regular rider Martin Pedroza, who has ridden the colt in all of his seven races, has the call.
Well Armed (Tr: Eoin Harty) - Locally-based Well Armed worked 4f under jockey Aaron Gryder on Monday morning in 47 and Gryder will ride the 5yo gelding whether trainer Eoin Harty enters him in the Classic or the Dirt Mile.
Well Armed, winner of the Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita on Sept. 27, is owned by Bill and Sue Casner's WinStar Farm, who also owns Colonel John.
"Having to decide between the Classic and the Dirt Mile for him, and possibly having the two horses in the Classic, is a nice spot to be in," said Harty. "We're very fortunate."
