Be Smart (Tr: D. Wayne Lukas) - Be Smart, recent runner-up in the Darley Alcibiades stakes at Keeneland, galloped over Churchill Downs' main track Monday morning. Trained by Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas - a leading five-time winner of the $2 million Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies - Be Smart is scheduled to arrive in California Tuesday morning. She will be ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez.
Black Magic Mama (Tr: Doug O'Neill; ex. rider: Beto Gomez) - Black Magic Mama jogged 1 1/2m at Santa Anita under exercise rider Beto Gomez on Monday.
"I thought she ran dynamite in her last race," trainer Doug O'Neill said of the maiden's fourth-place finish in the Oak Leaf Stakes Sept. 27 at Santa Anita. "She was wide from the 10 hole at a mile-and-a-sixteenth in only her second start and first at two turns.
"She's stepping up a little, but she acts like the talent is there."
Rafael Bejarano is scheduled to ride the filly for the first time.
C. S. Silk (Tr: Dale Romans) - C.S. Silk arrived in California on Sunday along with stablemate Thorn Song (Mile) and walked the shedrow. The Juvenile Fillies contender will gallop the rest of the week. In her final workout, the Arlington-Washington Lassie winner breezed 5f in 59 2/5 at Churchill Downs on Friday, Oct. 17.
"She's doing very well," trainer Dale Romans said. "She worked great."
Doremifasollatido (Tr: James Jerkens) - Doremifasollatido galloped 1 1/2m under exercise rider Kelvin Pahal at Santa Anita on Monday. The James Jerkens-trained 2yo filly, who had worked 7f in 1:25 3/5 last Friday, will make her first start over a synthetic racing surface in the Juvenile Fillies.
"She seems like she has no problem with the surface. She seems to be getting over it fine," Jerkens said. "She's kind of rugged and I have the feeling that she'll run on anything."
The New York-bred filly captured the Matron at Belmont Park in her most recent start under regular rider Eibar Coa.
Dream Empress (Tr: Ken McPeek) - The Darley Alcibiades winner galloped 1m at Keeneland on Monday and will do the same Tuesday before shipping to California.
"She's doing well," trainer Ken McPeek said. "It was a good work (59 4/5 for 5f on Friday). She'll need to show some improvement to win, but she's coming to the race the right way."
Jockey Kent Desormeaux is scheduled to ride.
Evita Argentina (Tr: John Sadler; ex. rider: Dana Barnes) - Halo Farms and Three Sisters Thoroughbreds' Evita Argentina galloped 1 1/8m on the main track at Santa Anita under exercise rider Dana Barnes.
The John Sadler trainee arrived at Santa Anita on Sunday afternoon from Hollywood Park, where she had been stabled since the end of the Del Mar meet in early September. Evita Argentina had her final work for the Juvenile Fillies on Thursday at Hollywood Park, covering 6f in 1:12 1/5.
Alex Solis, a three-time Breeders' Cup winner, retains the mount on Evita Argentina. The pair teamed up for the first time in the Del Mar Debutante in which Evita Argentina ran fourth in a field of 12.
Palacio de Amor (Tr: Myung Kwon Cho; ex. rider: Diego Sotelo) - Palacio de Amor, runner-up in the Oak Leaf, worked 4f on the Santa Anita main track Monday in 46 3/5, third best of 49 at the distance.
Assistant trainer Maria Ayala called the work "very good" as she talked with exercise rider Diego Sotelo following the drill.
Ayala said the filly will jog and gallop up to the race, and will be ridden by Victor Espinoza.
Persistently (Tr: Shug McGaughey) - Persistently walked the shedrow Monday morning after tuning up for the Juvenile Fillies with a 4f workout in 50 3/5 at Santa Anita on Sunday.
The Shug McGaughey-trained daughter of Smoke Glacken has developed a quirk in her training since shipping from New York.
"She's been clocking this gap since we've been here," assistant trainer Buzz Tenney said, noting that the Phipps Stable homebred loses her focus as she passes the gap leading from the barn area to the track at the top of the stretch. "She'd done none of this before we got here, and I think her work was a bit slower than you might like to see."
Persistently, who finished second in both the Matron and the Frizette at Belmont in her two most recent starts, will be ridden by Alan Garcia.
Pursuit of Glory (Tr: David Wachman) - The Irish-bred filly, Pursuit of Glory, who broke her maiden on Polytrack at Dundalk (Ireland) in September, arrived at Santa Anita early Monday and spent the day in quarantine.
David Wachman trains the daughter of Fusaichi Pegasus who was third in the Cheveley Park Stakes on grass last out. Johnny Muragh retains the mount.
Sky Diva (Tr: Steve Klesaris) - Off a pair of powerful wins on dirt to begin her career, Sky Diva must now prove she can handle Santa Anita's Pro-Ride surface.
"That's my only concern," trainer Steve Klesaris said of the surface switch. "She's trained well over whatever we've put her on, including the Tapeta (synthetic surface). The synthetics are deceiving. There are very few horses who won't train good over it, but running on it in a competitive situation in the afternoon is a different story. Mani Bhavan is a perfect example of that."
Sky Diva broke her maiden at first asking around two turns over a sloppy track at Delaware sPark on Sept. 9, and she swung back four weeks later to win the Frizette in equally impressive fashion.
"We knew from the start she was talented," Klesaris said. "It's nice when they prove that to you. She's the typical two-turn filly. She's tall and long-legged with an upright body. She has the tactical ability of a sprinter, but she'll run as far as they write races. That's a great weapon."
Ramon Dominguez, the only race-day pilot the filly has known, will get a leg up again Friday.
Stardom Bound (Tr: Christopher Paasch; ex. rider: Bruno Delgadillo) - Stardom Bound, winner of the Oak Leaf Stakes and Del Mar Debutante, jogged 2m on Cushion Track at Hollywood Park Monday under exercise rider Bruno Delgadillo.
"Everything's perfect," said trainer Christopher Paasch. "She worked here Saturday (5f) in 59 and 1 and galloped out (6f) in 1:11 and 4 under Bruno, who weighs 138 pounds.
"When Mike (jockey Mike Smith) came by the other day, he couldn't believe how much better she looks since the Oak Leaf," continued Paasch. "She's gotten bigger and stronger, and he couldn't believe how well she worked."
Stardom Bound's last two come-from-behind Grade 1 victories may have earned her favoritism in the Juvenile Fillies.
"I never take anything for granted," Paasch said. "Two-year-olds are changing so quickly at this time of year. She's proven herself at the distance and over the surface, a big plus for us."
Paasch said the Tapit filly would be shipped to Santa Anita on Wednesday.
Van Lear Rose (Tr: Catherine Day-Phillips) - Van Lear Rose, trained by Catherine Day-Phillips and owned by Kingview Farms, arrived from Canada on Sunday and walked on Monday.
The trip was the first time the filly has left her home barn at Woodbine and she handled it like a frequent flyer.
"She arrived in really good order and is doing very well," said Todd Phillips, husband of the trainer.
All five of Van Lear Rose's races have been on Woodbine's Polytrack and Phillips is convinced that Santa Anita's Pro-Ride surface will suit her just fine.
Chantal Sutherland, who will be in the irons on race day and has ridden the filly in every start but her first, recently moved her tack from Woodbine to Southern California and told the trainer that the surface here should be of no concern.
Van Lear Rose is scheduled to school at the gate and in the paddock for the rest of the week and gallop up to the race.
