California Flag (Tr: Brian Koriner; ex. rider: Colleen Hartford) - California Flag went trackside Monday morning at 8:25 under exercise rider Colleen Hartford and worked 3f in 34 4/5 as his last major prep leading up to Saturday's Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.
Hartford, who also serves as assistant to the horse's trainer, Brian Koriner, nodded in approval when asked about the work. "He went really well," she said.
Koriner also was pleased with his California homebred, who comes into the race off a nifty score in the Morvich Handicap at Santa Anita on September 24.
"This is a chance of a lifetime for that man (Keith Card, 81, owner and breeder of California Flag)," the trainer said. "The horse ran a terrific race down the hill (on Santa Anita's hillside turf course) and set a course record. They're running back down the hill again Saturday. It was a 'Win-and-You're-In' race, so when they asked us if we wanted to run, the answer was: 'Why not?'"
The son of Avenue of Flags has started only 11 times in his career and on eight of those occasions he's been partnered by Joseph Talamo. The young rider out of New Orleans will be aboard once more on Saturday.
Diabolical (Tr: Saeed bin Suroor) - Frankie Dettori will ride the son of Artax, who will be making his first start in the U.S. since winning the A.G. Vanderbilt at Saratoga on July 28, 2007. Diabolical was on the Godolphin flight scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles Monday afternoon.
Fleeting Spirit (Tr: Jeremy Noseda) - The 3yo filly trained by Jeremy Noseda arrived at Santa Anita on Sunday evening following a flight from Europe in the Breeders' Cup charter. The daughter of Invincible Spirit will be ridden by Ryan Moore.
Get Funky (Tr: John Sadler) - Keith Abrahams' Get Funky walked the shedrow at trainer John Sadler's barn a day after putting in his final work for the Turf Sprint, a 1:12 1/5 move for 6f at Santa Anita.
Get Funky, who has been stabled at Santa Anita since the end of the Del Mar meeting in early September, will be ridden by Jose Valdivia Jr. on Saturday. Valdivia, who has one Breeders' Cup victory on his resume, has ridden Get Funky in his past three starts which include two stakes victories.
Idiot Proof (Tr: Clifford Sise Jr.) - Trainer Clifford Sise Jr. will send out his sharp sprinter for a 4f work on Santa Anita's Hillside Turf Course Tuesday morning to close out serious work for Saturday's Turf Sprint at about 6 1/2f on the downhill course.
Sise said the nation's leading rider by earnings, Garrett Gomez, will ride the sprinter.
Mr. Nightlinger (Tr: Bret Calhoun) - The 4yo son of Indian Charlie brings a five-race win streak into Saturday's Turf Sprint for trainer Bret Calhoun, who will be making his first Breeders' Cup appearance.
"I had Cactus Ridge for the Juvenile a couple of years ago, but he got hurt a week before the race," Calhoun said. We've had some nice horses, but this (having a Breeders' Cup starter) is huge for us."
Mr. Nightlinger raced on grass only once from his first 13 starts. Always a useful horse, he's recently developed into a turf sprint specialist.
"We ran him 7 ½ furlongs on the turf in the spring of his 3yo season," Calhoun recalled. "He ran a big race, but speed doesn't hold up very well over that course, and he finished fourth. We really didn't have the right opportunity to get back on the grass, so we got back on the 3-year-old plan."
That plan included a run in the Lone Star Derby, a race in which he battled for the early lead before finishing a respectable third at odds of 28-1.
"Then he colicked and missed some time," Calhoun said of a nearly four-month layoff. "We wanted to get him back on the turf this winter at Fair Grounds, but the races didn't fill. Our only option was the Shakertown at Keeneland."
Sent off at odds of 21-1, Mr. Nightlinger led at every call, and he hasn't lost since, rattling off four more gate-to-wire tallies, the most recent of which came in the Arlington Sprint.
"He's been good for a while, but the move to turf turned him into a different horse," Calhoun said. "There were a couple of fast horses in the Arlington Sprint, and I thought there was a chance that we might have to lay off of them, but two or three jumps out of the gate, he was already in front. The best thing about him is he's fast, but at the end he's still running. He doesn't come back to them. He's just been running them off their feet."
Mr. Nightlinger is scheduled to arrive at Santa Anita on Wednesday. Jamie Theriot, who is perfect from five starts as the colt's partner, is slated to ride on Saturday.
One Union (Tr: Richard Mandella) - Trainer Richard Mandella looked on intently as the 5yo son of Dixie Union reeled off a 1:01 1/5 workout over 5f on the turf Monday morning to close out serious training for Saturday's Turf Sprint.
"Very nice," Mandella said of the best of three works at the distance. "He just ran in the Morvich Handicap [third on Sept. 24], so he didn't need any fancy work."
Exercise rider Niphon "Paul" Nilluang was up for the work. Regular rider Victor Espinoza has the call on race day.
Only Answer (Tr: Andre Fabre) - Wertheimer & Frere's 4yo filly arrived Sunday afternoon on a KLM flight from Amsterdam. The daughter of Green Desert trained by Andre Fabre will be ridden by Olivier Peslier. She won her last start, the Group 3 Prix du Petit Couvert on September 14.
Salute the Count (Tr: Rick Dutrow Jr.) - Trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. reported that Turf Sprint pre-entrant Salute the Count may not make the race. Salute the Count had been scheduled to breeze Monday morning at Aqueduct, but that work was scrapped at the last minute.
"He had filling in a hind leg," Dutrow said. "I don't know if he's going to make the race at this point. If he's better in the morning we'll put him on the plane, but right now I'm not sure if he's gonna make it."
Dutrow added he would breeze Salute the Count at Santa Anita sometime this week if the gelding's filling subsides. Jockey Eibar Coa is supposed to ride.
Storm Treasure (Tr: Steve Asmussen) - Mike McCarty's 5yo horse completed his major work at Woodbine last week with a 4f breeze in 52 1/5. He arrived at Santa Anita on Sunday and is scheduled to go to the track each day for trainer Steve Asmussen.
