Here is the potential story of the 2004 Breeders' Cup.
A former horse of the year who had seemingly lost her way, Azeri has bounced back. She again looks the real deal.
It was her ready dismissal of Sightseek in the Grade One Go For Wand Handicap at Saratoga in August that rekindled the faith. She is now US racing's winningmost filly or mare with career earnings approaching the $4 million mark.
Victory at Lone Star Park would be the perfect way to bow out after such a glittering career.
Steven Crist says:
"Azeri would have a very good chance of bowing out on a winning note in the Distaff.
"Her primary rivals for the division are not here for the race, Sightseek retired and Adoration is hurt. I think she could gallop in that race to pick up $2million.
"I really hope they don't take on the males in the Classic. She isn't competitive and the trip is a furlong too far for her. Azeri can either be a hot favourite for the Distaff or a hopeless long shot in the Classic."
