John Velazquez and Todd Pletcher doubled up when Speightstown shot clear in the Breeders'
Cup Sprint.
The six-furlong dash was, as expected, run at a furious pace set by Abbondanza
from Our New Recruit and Gold Storm, with Speightstown in fourth place on the
inside.
Speightstown got a smooth run through off the bend and quickening in great
style, the six-year-old entire strode away to beat the strong-finishing Kela by
a length and a quarter, with My Cousin Matt another two back in third.
Velazquez said: "I was worried about the inside trip but I gave him a chance
and he took it.
"I knew we would win as soon as we got to the quarter-pole and I got through
on the inside. He just picked it up and he was gone, buddy."
Pletcher, who had never won a Breeders' Cup race before tonight, added: "It's
so sweet.
"John gave him a beautiful ride. It opened up at the top of the straight and
the horse took it."
