FLASHY WINGS IS YORK QUEEN
Flashy Wings stormed to an impressive success in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot at York on Wednesday.
The Mick Channon-trained filly travelled well throughout for Ted Durcan and
picked up smartly inside the last furlong to come home a comfortable three
lengths clear of Salut D'Amour.
Mick Easterby's Bow Bridge stayed on for third, another length away.
The daughter of Zafonic was following in the illustrious steps of Channon's
other winners of this race, Bint Allayl (1998) and Queen's Logic (2001).
She was sent off the 4-1 joint-favourite together with the runner-up, a
rewarding price considering she had long been thought of as one of the bankers
of the meeting for many.
Bookmakers were suitably impressed and she was given a 14-1 quote by William
Hill for next year's 1000 Guineas.
Channon said: "She's a bit special, we always knew that, but you've still got
to go and do it.
"With the rain coming, the ground was my biggest fear - it was horrible
ground, but her class got her through, which was great.
"She's very, very good - I haven't had one like it since Queen's Logic and
Bint Allayl.
When asked about rumours she had had a setback in training, Channon replied:
"She worked brilliantly last Tuesday, but she was a bit stiff the day after,
which was a worry. But once we loosened her up she was fine."
Durcan added: "She's got plenty of class. I was in front plenty early enough
and she was looking round in the closing stages.
"She's so relaxed that I think she will probably get a mile next year. She's
very special."
