Somnus - can prove best of sprinters.
SOMNUS THE SPRINT KING
Somnus is favourite for Saturday's Golden Jubilee Stakes and at his best he is probably the best sprinter in this country at present. He was twice a winner in France last season and has maintained a very good level of form through recent seasons. He ran encouragingly first time out behind The Kiddykid at this course and he usually needs a run before finding his best form. I think he will be cherry ripe now and is sure to run a huge race. Antonius Pius is a very good miler but one who is very quirky. He has run some terrific races at Group One level but didn't really shine on his reappearance and you just have to wonder if the Aidan O'Brien team are desperately trying something new here. The colt does have a touch of class and milers can drop back to win the top six furlong races but this one is too quirky for me. Etlaala hasn't really gone on this season. He dropped back to sprinting last time when seventh behind Celtic Mill in the Temple Stakes and it is fair to say he didn't quite have the run of the race. He should be better going back up to six furlongs here but you still have to wonder whether he has quite trained on. Cape Of Good Hope is a really solid benchmark and never runs a bad race, finishing fourth behind Chineur in the King's Stand Stakes. He can be in the frame again. If the race falls right for Quito he is capable of almost anything, Patavellian is worthy of a second look while Steenberg ran very well in the Duke of York. On the balance of the overall form I think Somnus is the best horse in the race and he can win it. Saturday's biggest betting heat is the Wokingham and Iffraaj and Soldier's Tale dominate the market. The theory is both are Group horses in a handicap and they do hold fancy entries. Soldier's Tale put up a remarkable performance to win at the May meeting at York. He must have been 15 lengths off the pace at one point, before running on powerfully to catch Fonthill Road. He has had one or two problems in his career and ground conditions need to be right for him but the Jeremy Nosdea team is in great form. Iffraaj won the Victoria Cup last time and looks an exciting prospect. He has a lot of scope for improvement and natural speed. It is a toss of the coin between the two - and they look the ones to concentrate on - and if you push me I will go for Iffraaj.
