Double Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell admitted his OBE was a fitting
end to a magnificent year.
Cracknell was part of the men's coxless fours which claimed gold for Britain
at the Athens Games, with Canada finishing just 0.08seconds behind in a
nail-biting final.
The 32-year-old, who has been `upgraded' from an MBE in the New Year's Honours
list, featured alongside Sir Matthew Pinsent, Ed Coode and Steve Williams in the
winning team.
``Athens was very special for us. It was the culmination of four years' hard
work and we were delighted that our efforts paid off,'' he said.
``That other people enjoyed our success made the Games even more special.
Being awarded an OBE obviously adds greatly to the achievement.''
Pinsent has been honoured with a knighthood and Cracknell - himself twice a
gold-medallist now - toasted the four-times Olympic rowing champion.
He said: ``Many congratulations to Matthew - he thoroughly deserves this
award.''
Coode and Williams have each been made an MBE.
