ELEANOR SIMMONDS CLAIMS GOLD

Eleanor Simmonds produced a dominant performance to win the S6 400m freestyle title at the IPC Swimming European Championships in Reykjavik.

The 14-year-old, in a time of five minutes 37.31 seconds, led home fellow Briton Natalie Jones to claim her first European title.

She said: "I am really happy to have the title and the gold medal but I did want to go faster in my final because I felt really good in my heat. But it was good to win the race by that much."

Jones, who held off Norway's Sarah Louise Rung to win silver, said: "That was a seven-second personal best which is just great. I am really pleased with the silver, I am so happy."

Jonathan Fox edged out Croatia's Mihovil Spanja to win a thrilling S7 400m freestyle by just 0.36sec in 4:56.18.

He said: "That was a tough race and winning the gold medal has left me a bit speechless. I went out fast, it worked for me and I feel really proud and happy to have won the title."

Stephanie Millward won the S9 100m butterfly in a commanding 1:10.78, and said: "It was a good swim but a really tough race for me physically. It would have been nice to have broken my European record but maybe another day. I am ecstatic to be champion."

Spain's Sarai Gascon Moreno was second, with Britain's Elizabeth Simpkin moving through the field to claim the bronze.

Jim Anderson won gold in the men's S5 50m freestyle, leading a British one-two ahead of Anthony Stephens.

Eleni Papadopoulos took S10 100m butterfly silver in her first major international competition, Thomas Young and Sean Fraser were second and third behind Russia's Konstantin Lisenkov in the men's S8 100m backstroke, and Matt Whorwood won men's S6 400m freestyle bronze.
